Replacement Clutch Fitting

I borrow the outer clutch hub from my other GS1100G Restoration Project (owned since new and therefore with a genuine 18,000 on it) and fitted in to this bike.
The one on the right was the one from my Resoration bike and definitely had less movement in those large drive compression springs than my old Road Runner one.  Even so the amount of movement or rattle was still significant.  The only way to cure this is to replace these springs completely (or shim them) which means cutting off those 3 rivets, changing the springs and then welding the rivets back on.  Something I will try and avoid having to do.
I marked up the Restoration Project hub as "Dad's".
I even bought a new rubber cushion as the old one (on the left here) looked rather poorly. I am willing to try anything to stop this rattling noise.
 Put it all back together.

Tightened hub nut up with bike in 5th gear (on side stand), an 18 inch breaker bar and a rubber mallet.  I can only guess at the torque setting this replicates but it has to be way tighter than it was on there in the first place (and on the other bike too).
Flattened the tab and reused another section of it to secure the nut.  I did buy another tab washer but I got the feeling this clutch might be coming off again soon and that this washer would do in the meantime.
Put it all back together and ran it up:
To be honest; it is not any better.  Probably worse from the noise point of view.  What I don't get is that the noise I can hear sounds nothing like a bunch of lose springs on the outer hub.  Sounds far more serious than that.  Like the clutch itself is bouncing around on the shaft.  But it can't be can it?

  1. Verify if there's any play between the splines on the shaft and the clutch hub. first version of the hub (as on my 81 1100e) came with a full aluminum hub while subsequent versions came with an aluminum hub with a steel inset pressed in. On mine there was a lot of play that was doing a kind of loud CLAK CLAK at idle ! I ordered a used hub with the steel insert on ebay.

  2. Mine had a terrible rattle at idle. Turned out to be the starter clutch was loose on the back of the alternator. 2 of the 3 holding screws were broken. Fixed those and the bike is nice and quiet now.
