It's been a long
time since I took a bike out on a winter drive so I had forgotten what
damage salt can do to a bike if it is not washed off. I had left this
for about 2 weeks.
And even after it is washed off it leaves a bad mark on the aluminum:
Perhaps this is a reason to clear coat all exposed metal surfaces.
i'd just polish it a little bit, and wipe it with wd40, such a patina gives the bike vintage character. Regarding coating it, there is such product Protewax BP 527, specially made for sealing aluminum, its almost thin as water, and literally soaks into old and porous metal. Of course the surface has to properly degreased first.
